Hakone is located along Tokaido, the historic roads of the Edo period (1603-1868) connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and Kyoto, and was developed as “shukubamachi”, a town offering food and accommodation to travellers. Not to mention the spectacular view of nearby Mt. Fuji, there are numerous tourist spots in this area, such as Owakudani volcanic valley and beautiful Ashinoko lake. Its breathtaking landscape can be seen in one of Hiroshige’s, the famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist, masterpieces. And most of all, a large number of well-established hot springs is a major tourist attraction in Hakone.
SOUNKAKU is a traditional Japanese-style inn located near the top of Mt. Soun. Our guests can enjoy splendid landscape overlooking the mountains of Hakone. The popular tourist spots are easily accessible from our nearest station, Sounzan. We have been in business for over 80 years and fully renovated in April 2010 to offer the spirit of traditional Japanese aesthetics with elegant scent of Japanese cypress wood while retaining classical atmosphere.
